What is Light Amplification?

🔆 Why Does My Boat Floor Get Hot?

Let’s Talk About Light Amplification

Ever seen your deck get hot in one small spot while the rest stays cooler? That’s not a fluke — it’s something called light amplification, and it happens on almost every boat flooring brand (even DEKit). Here’s what it is, and how we help you avoid it.

☀️ So, What Is Light Amplification?

Light amplification is a fancy way of saying “the sun is acting like a magnifying glass.”
Here’s how it happens:

  • Sunlight bounces off things like your under gunnels, stainless rails, or coolers

  • It gets focused into a small area on the deck

  • That spot heats up more than the rest

On certain days, it can make one small patch of foam hot to the touch, slightly change texture, or even curl.

🚫 Is This a Defect?

Nope. It’s not a flaw in DEKit or the foam — this can happen with any EVA marine flooring brand. It’s like how vinyl seats can burn your legs in July — not broken, just physics.

We believe in being upfront and honest, which is why we’re sharing this info with you before install.

🛠️ What We Do to Help Prevent It

At DEKit, we take extra steps most installers skip:

  • ✅ Recommend layout choices that reduce heat focus

  • ✅ Add 3mm material to high-risk areas to help reduce bounce

  • ✅ Can provide a discount on a new LaPorte cover

  • ✅ Use foam that holds up better in heat than cheaper options

🧊 What You Can Do To Help

Light amplification is rare, but here are some ways to avoid it:

  • Before install, we’ll work with you to identify any high-risk areas

  • Lay a towel or cushion over small spots when docked in full sun
